What is this second-hand boat going to cost you?

The price in a listing is not the price of a boat. This tool adds what comes afterwards: the berth, the insurance, the taxes, and putting her right — including the part you never see coming. It is calibrated on our real figures, published on the budget page.

Where these figures come from

A calculator that does not say how it works is worth nothing. Here is every coefficient and where it comes from.

ItemRule appliedSource
Berth€412/m/year by default, overridableReal — €6,600/yr for our 16 m in the Mediterranean
Insurance0.7% of the value of the boat, minimum €250Real — €460 for a boat at €68,500, i.e. 0.67%
Taxes and administration€25/m/yearProportion taken from our own case (€400 for 16 m). Check against the rules where you are
Putting right — needs restoring€1,700/mReal — €27,135 of identified work on our 16 m
Putting right — fair / well maintained€800 and €350/mEstimate, scaled from the case above
What we had not planned forup to +60% on the worksLived — see the €14,000 debt

The result is an order of magnitude, not a quotation. Two items can blow it apart and cannot be modelled: rigging that needs replacing — €15,000 in our case — and an engine that needs replacing.

Our own case, for comparison

1979 CNSO Mikado ketch, 16 m, needs restoring—
Asking price€68,500
Work identified so far€27,135
Annual running costs€7,460
Real cost over 5 years€132,935

The purchase price is 52% of the bill. We found that out afterwards. You know it beforehand.

And for the electrics, there is the other tool

Once the boat is bought, the next question is almost always the same: what battery capacity, how much solar, what cable size. That is exactly what the electrical configurator does, free during the launch phase.

And if you want to follow what a refit really costs from start to finish, it is all set out month by month in the logbook and summed up once a month in the yard letter.
